Last week Lennet Johansen of Euefa made headlines for suggesting that in order for women’s football to gain more sponsorship they should perhaps be shown getting sweaty on the pitch only to emerge looking stunning from the changing rooms after the match. Subsequent to this I was also present during a conversation about wimbledon and someone mentioned that the only female player he would be watching would be Maria Sharipova and that it wasn’t her abilities in tennis he was interested in. so, why do you watch women’s sport. Is it because of the sex appeal of the women? Do women command the same respect in sport as men? Yeh I understand that men are also marketed on their sex appeal – the Beckham brand is quite big, and you don’t see the sponsors showing the less attractive players in their adverts, but none the less, it seems that men are looked at more as sports stars and women are seen more as sexual objects who brighten up the field. Thoughts?
Well I only watch womens tennis. I'm not interested in any other womens sports. I prefer womens tennis to mens tennis because the matches are over quicker. I find it overall to be more exciting. I think their are other ways of getting people interested in womens football though, and I don't think that the audience will be increased simply by making it more attractive to men. What about the kids. Get tickets for schools to gtake kids of both gendas to watch the matches. This will promote the game and even produce more stars.
I think Gender rolling in schools and the home certainly needs to be sorted out some more before women's sport is taken as seriously as men's. I'm no expert but certainly the younger people I know, talking school age, are still of the opinion that football is primarily a "boy's game" Wayne Rooney, for example, is not good-looking at all but his talent on the football field is rarely questioned whereas I've heard female sports players being referred to as butch, and as SB said above men rarely seem to watch wome's sport for the talent factor but for the physique or short skirts. So, girls, let's get all the male sports stars sweaty on the field then srpuce them up and wolf whistle and make sexist remarks. turn the tables.
well I have to say I went to a wedding some years back at which the members of a women's football team were present. (i won't name the team in question in case someone knows any of 'em), but I can tell you there wasn't a femanin looking one amongst the lot of 'em! In fact, we had a competition to "spot the straight one", as we were reliably informed that they were all lesbians bar one. grin.
I watch sport purely due to the talent of the athletes ect in climbing for instance women have never been taken seriously and many top women climbers are insulted picked on and abused by seriouisly insecure inadequate men ...a great many men, well, overgrown little boys, are intimidated and downright scared of women who achieve success... I did notice in the paralympics they showed only a brief highlight of the womens wheelchair basketball, and I would really liked to have watched that, as the girls play even harder than the men...
